What is Kinesiology taping?
Kinesiology or kinesiotape is best described as a colourful, elastic, adhesive tape that we sometime put on your skin. K-tape was first developed by Dr. Kenzo Kase in Japan over 25 yrs ago. He liked to say the tape was continuing what his hands were doing after the patient had left the clinic. It was developed to assist the healing of traumatised tissue rather than simply immobilizing the joints. This lack of immobilization is one of the main reasons I like using kinesotapes.
Why use Kinesiology Tape?
I believe that immobilising the body prolongs the problem. Kinesiotape, by allowing fuller ranges of movement quicker, means you can keep to your normal activities, sports and hobbies, substantially reducing recovery times and limiting your time away from sport
This shorter time away from sport, allows greater consistency in your training, leading to you performing better. This is particularly helpful when treating acute injuries where there is some swelling evident and a quick return to activity is needed
I prefer to use to Rocktape another brand on kinesiotape because in my opinion it lasts longer than some other brands of tape. This is particularly important when taping for sport. I’ve seen Rocktape described as Duct tape for the human body and we know how versatile and sticky duct tape can be!
Rocktape works in longer term or chronic injuries as well, where due to training, competing and traveling demands elite sports people having been able to get in to be properly treated. This really is where Rocktapes versatility comes into play. It sticks to their skin while allowing them to continue to heal and move , but due to the nature of the tape it still allows them to compete in national and international events and levels. I often use rocktape in clinic with the same rational, so that people can carry on their everyday life.
Rocktape is also used on none elite sportspeople. People more like us. when a problem has occurred too late to allow the injury to heal. Amongst some of the problems taped have been “shin splints” and runners knee, This was a short term fix to allow people to compete and finish ultra running events. I have also used for various cycling disciplines and events as well.
When to Use Kinesiology Tape?
As Taping is part of my treatment I, unlike some others don’t charge any extra for using kinesiology tape with my patients. The different colours of the tape has no therapeutic value, but it may be that team colours are needed or that you need it to remain as near unnoticed as possible so feel free to choose what colour you want when in (If i have it, although some people go as far as ordering their own favourite colour tape in!) I initially trained to use Kinesio tape with Kinesio UK to what was termed advanced level, further training was done with RockTape and I’m a qualified ‘Rock Doc’. I also make an effort to keep up with the latest research on Kinesiotape. To find applications that appear to work better, but also more importantly, those that don’t work.
